A brand is a unique symbol that distinguishes one's products or services from those of competitors. According to the American Marketing Association (AMA), a brand can be a name, term, sign, symbol, or combination of these elements that sets products and services apart from those of competitors.

It is an intangible asset of a business that has a monetary value, such as reputation, prestige, and goodwill. In today's world, a brand's economic value can exceed tangible assets such as buildings and machinery.

There are various types of brands, including denominative, figurative, mixed, pattern, position, sound, smell, collective, and guaranty or certification brands. Legally, a brand can be protected by intellectual property as an artwork or as a commercial brand through industrial property.

To have exclusive worldwide use and exploitation of a brand, it must be registered in the national trademark office of the countries where the brand's products or services will be commercialized.
